The Commonwealth Secretariat 2018 Trade Review presented at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) revealed that intra-Commonwealth trade in goods and services was US$560 billion in 2016; as light reduction from 2015 figures due to the effects of the slowdown in world trade growth.

However, intra-Commonwealth trade is rising and is now 20 per cent of Commonwealth countries’ total trade with the world. This underlines the growing significance of Commonwealth markets for many member countries.

Hamburg is bidding for the Rotary International Convention 2019

Hamburg, 4th June 2015 – The decision has now been made: Hamburg will be the host city of the 2019 Rotary International Convention. It is expected that some 22,000 Rotarians will arrive in the north German city of Hamburg between 1 and 5 June 2019 to join the annual event of Rotary, the oldest service club in the world. The Hamburg Convention Bureau GmbH (HCB) and the Rotary District 1890 Germany jointly managed Hamburg’s bid and have been able to convince Rotary International of the benefits of Hamburg as a host city.

The Rotary International Convention (RIC), the rotating global event of Rotary International, will thus be held in Hamburg. For around 22,000 Rotarians, this annual event serves as a networking platform to meet friends from around the world and to establish new international contacts. The event will be attended by Rotarians and various guests from around 180 countries and regions worldwide. The overall objective of the RIC is to enable participants who are linked by shared values to engage in collaboration on service projects for making the world a better place. The Rotary International conventions are designed to inspire, inform and engage Rotarians and their guests.

Susie Kitchens discusses opportunities for women in trade during tea meeting

Yesterday, the UK Deputy High Commissioner to Kenya, Susie Kitchens, accepted an invitation to tea from the Commonwealth Businesswomen’s Network (CBW) with founder of PowerWoman International, Nana Wanjau, ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in London 2018.

She clearly enjoyed the meeting as she Tweeted afterwards that “If you are invited to tea with the Commonwealth Businesswomen’s Network and PowerWoman International, go!”

The Commonwealth Businesswomen’s Network works with women in business by connecting Governments and the private sector to encourage and enable women’s economic empowerment. It achieves this through delivering activities, initiatives, products and services focused on trade, talent and training. CBW also sits on the main governance body on gender for the 53 Commonwealth Governments and can lobby on the behalf of its members.

Kenyan based PowerWoman International believes that when you empower a woman, you have empowered her entire home, community and nation. They support ostracised women under four pillars; Counselling, Widow Shelters, Education and Female Empowerment.
